Liquorice is one of the rare sweets whose boundary with medicine is historically blurred. The Glycyrrhiza glabra plant has been used in medicine for over 4,000 years in China and ancient Egypt to treat coughs and stomach pains. Its root contains glycyrrhizin, a compound 50 times sweeter than sugar. In the Middle Ages, European monks cultivated it in their medicinal gardens. The black liquorice sweets we know appeared much later, in the 18th century in England. Consumed in large quantities, however, liquorice can cause arterial hypertension.
