What is the origin of Christmas stockings? Long ago, Saint Nicholas wanted to help 3 sisters in need. Their father was desperate to not be able to provide a dowry so they could marry. Saint Nicholas caught wind of this story and, one winter night, he slipped down the chimney some gold coins that landed in the girls' stockings, which they had left to dry there overnight. The girls discovered the happy surprise the next morning and were so grateful that they told this story to anyone who would listen. Thus Christmas stockings entered the Christmas tradition.
